ARTICLEThe use of Regenerative Medicine in Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery

The potential of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), adipose tissue, and bone marrow can also be used for bone deficiencies to promote the stability of dental implants: this is what specialists and researchers have highlighted in recent years of regenerative medicine.

The IRCCS Galeazzi Oral Department

The clinical activity of the Oral Department of the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi is developed both in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. Being a university clinic, research plays an important role in the activity of this department. “Research is a significant part of our work and embraces all sectors of dentistry: implantology, endodontics, orthodontics …” explains Professor Del Fabbro (Associate Professor UNIMI).  “For over 10 years we have been studying and using PRP and platelet concentrates, coming up with a “know-how” guide that we have shared with the other departments of our Center. That has considerably grown thanks to the research on mesenchymal stem cells developed by Dr. Laura de Girolamo, Head of the Biotechnology Laboratory for Orthopedics and Director of RE.GA.IN.®.”

The Clinical use of Growth Factors in Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery

“We use growth factors in all operations where there is a need to regenerate bone or soft tissue,” says Professor Taschieri – Assistant Professor UNIMI. “Platelet concentrates have many properties, not only to trigger healing reactions quickly, but, as evidenced by scientific studies conducted in our Institute, they have antibacterial properties and are able to control postoperative infections, which in many cases can affect the success of the intervention. These are very effective factors in the regeneration of many tissues. They are just as effective as surgical procedures in reducing some symptoms and achieving satisfaction on the part of our patients as evidenced by the simple questionnaires we collect in the context of RE.GA.IN.®.”

RE.GA.IN.®, as an innovative center, focuses on patient communication. As soon as the patient reaches the Center they are informed about the type of cutting-edge and safe regenerative medicine treatment they will receive. Through the dedicated InCytes ™ app, the patient will fill out questionnaires at all phases of treatment, having the option to contact us if needed.

Future Progression Thanks to RE.GA.IN.®

InCytes ™ not only allows the patient to know the progress of their therapy through simple and usable graphics, but allows the RE.GA.IN.® team to acquire valuable information for our ever-evolving clinical research.

“The use of growth factors currently shows significant results, but it is essential that we deepen our knowledge, especially on their mechanisms of action, verifying the concomitant use of PRP and mesenchymal stem cells,” concludes Dr. Massimo Del Fabbro and Dr. Laura de Girolamo.
